How to track your brand in AI answers

A practical method for measuring how ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and other AI assistants talk about your brand, and what to do about it.

Why it matters

Buyers now ask AI first.

More buyers research by asking an AI assistant a question instead of searching and clicking through results. If the answer recommends a competitor and never mentions you, you lose the buyer before they ever reach your website, and you cannot see it happening in your analytics.

Tracking AI visibility means asking the same questions your buyers ask, on the engines they use, on a regular schedule, and recording whether you appear.

Step by step

Six steps to a tracking programme.

  1. 01

Write the prompts your buyers ask

Start with 10 to 20 real questions across the funnel: category questions ("best tool for…"), comparison questions ("X vs Y"), and problem questions ("how do I…"). Use your sales team's call notes and your site search terms as sources.

  2. 02

    Pick the engines that matter

ChatGPT and Gemini are a sensible starting pair. Add Perplexity, Claude, Copilot, Grok or Google's AI Overviews when your buyers use them.

  3. 03

    Name your competitors

List the three to five brands that appear alongside you most often, so every answer is checked for them too.

  4. 04

    Check on a schedule

AI answers change as models and the web change. Weekly checks show trends; daily checks catch fast shifts in competitive categories.

  5. 05

Record more than yes or no

Note whether you were mentioned, where in the answer, how you were described, which competitors appeared, and which sources the engine cited.

  6. 06

    Turn gaps into fixes

When you are missing, look at what the answer cites and what your own pages lack, then fix the content, structure and third-party presence behind it.

What to fix when you are missing

Common causes and fixes.

  • 01

Your pages don't answer the question directly

Add a clear, quotable answer near the top of the relevant page, then the detail.

  • 02

Engines can't tell what your company does

Use one consistent definition of your product everywhere, and add Organization and product structured data.

  • 03

    Your FAQs aren't machine-readable

Mark FAQ sections up with FAQPage structured data.

  • 04

Competitors are cited from third-party sites

Earn mentions on the review sites, directories and publications the engines already cite.

  • 05

AI crawlers can't reach your content

Check that robots.txt allows the AI crawlers you want to be cited by.

How many prompts should I track?

Start with 10 to 20 that cover category, comparison and problem questions, then add more as you learn which ones drive decisions in your market.

Why do AI answers change from one check to the next?

Models are updated, and engines with web search pull in new sources, so the same question can get a different answer over time. That is why tracking on a schedule matters more than a one-off check.

Can I check my AI visibility for free?

Yes. The free AI Visibility Audit runs a small set of real prompts against live Gemini and shows whether your brand is mentioned. (AI Visibility Audit (Free Tool))
