Glossary

Plain-language definitions of the terms behind AI visibility and AI-driven lead generation.

AI visibility, GEO and AEO.

Visitor identification and qualification.

  • 01

    Anonymous visitor

Someone browsing a website who has not filled in a form or logged in, so the business does not know who they are.

  • 02

    Deanonymization

Identifying the company, and where possible the person, behind an anonymous website visit.

  • 03

    Enrichment

Adding firmographic and contact data, such as company size, industry and role, to an identified visitor or lead.

  • 04

    Identity resolution

Recognising the same visitor across multiple sessions and devices, so their history is kept together.

  • 05

    ICP (Ideal Customer Profile)

The description of the companies and buyers that are the best fit for a product, usually by industry, size, region and need.

  • 06

    ICP scoring

Scoring each visitor or lead against the ICP, so sales teams focus on the best-fit prospects first.

  • 07

    Lead qualification

Deciding whether a lead is worth a sales conversation, based on fit and intent signals such as budget, timeline and use case.

  • 08

    Lead routing

Automatically assigning each qualified lead to the right rep or team using rules, for example by region, company size or product line.

  • 09

    High-intent visitor

A visitor whose behaviour, such as viewing pricing or integration pages repeatedly, suggests they are actively evaluating a purchase.

AI agents and automation.

  • 01

    Conversational AI agent

Software that holds a natural-language conversation with website visitors to answer questions, qualify them or resolve support issues.

  • 02

    Grounded response

An AI answer restricted to an approved knowledge base, rather than generated freely from the model's general training.

  • 03

    RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation)

The technique behind grounded responses: the system retrieves relevant passages from approved sources and the AI answers only from them.

  • 04

    Hallucination

When an AI states something plausible but false. Grounding and human handoff are the standard defences.

  • 05

    Human handoff

Passing a conversation from an AI agent to a person when the agent has no grounded answer or the visitor asks for a human.

  • 06

    Knowledge base

The pages, documents and files an AI agent is allowed to answer from.

  • 07

    Knowledge gap

A question visitors keep asking that the knowledge base answers poorly or not at all.

  • 08

    Playbook

An automation described in plain language, such as when a visitor does X, follow up with Y.

  • 09

    Social SDR

Automated sales-development outreach and replies on social channels, alongside email.

Measurement and pricing.

FAQ

What is the difference between GEO and AEO?

Both describe optimizing for AI-generated answers. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) focuses on being found and cited by generative AI engines; AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) focuses on being quoted as the direct answer. In practice they use the same techniques.

Is AI visibility the same as SEO?

No. SEO measures how pages rank in search results; AI visibility measures whether AI assistants mention and recommend a brand in their answers. They share foundations such as clear content and structured data.

What does it mean for an AI answer to be grounded?

The answer is restricted to approved sources retrieved at the time of the question, instead of being generated from the model's general knowledge, which makes it traceable and far less likely to be wrong.
